'Valentine to Iraq'

Picture

about 4' x 2.5'

Picture
I made this quilt at the time that the American casualties in Iraq reached the number 3,000.  My intention, originally, was to stitch 3,000 'X's' to represent the final moment of goodbye (a kiss?) between a mother and her soldier-child.  I only got to about 2,000, and in the process discovered what a large number 3,000 is.

Machine and hand quilted.  Fabrics include black felt, silk, organza, tulle, upholstery and quilting cottons.  Inclusions of cut-up quilts create many six-seven layers in places.  Embroidered words, "All Mothers of Sons Want Them to Live" and "Want All Wars to End" appear in fragments throughout.  Couched threads and ribbons.

I have made many Heart quilts, Grief quilts, and Peace Quilts.  This one could belong to any of those three series.

Liberty Quilt

Picture
This small quilt (roughly 7" x 8") features the hand-embroidered word, "free", while an antique astrology map transferred onto silk, with vintage lace and sparkling tulle, serves as a moon.  The Liberty figure comes from a polyester shirt - perhaps from the 70's.

Pieced, appliqued, hand and machine- quilted.                     $125.00

'Sanctuary V - Tribute to Steve Irwin'

About 3' x 3 1/2'                                                                            $425

Steve Irwin's energetic, respectful, and brave explorations of nature provided my boys with many hours of entertainment and education when they were little.  When he died, it seemed right to quilt a quilt in his honor.  Pieced, using fabrics produced in Australia and prints featuring aquatic creatures.  The central aqua door represents the entry to mystery, and hopefully, Sanctuary.
